A Prayer for the Bride Longing for a Groom

Heavenly Father,

I pray for the woman planning a wedding without a ring on her finger.

Maybe it’s a Pinterest board, a secret Spotify playlist, or a tear shed during a romantic movie that isn’t supposed to be sad. Maybe she’s lying in bed at night alone, playing a scene on loop in her mind and praying it will one day become her reality.

I pray that You would draw so near to this daughter of Yours, this little girl at heart who longs to be seen and known by someone who will love her for all that she is and all that she longs to be. When the ache of her soul feels too heavy to bear, I pray that You would cradle her heart in the palm of Your hands.

I pray that her community would love her well, that they would save a seat for her in their pew, that they would invite her into their homes for dinners and holidays and mundane Tuesday nights.

I pray that she would never lack for an earthly family, regardless of her marital status; that she would never be made to feel like her only purpose is to serve as a baby-sitter for those living a life she dreams of having someday.

I pray that You would bless her with life-giving relationships with Christians in all contexts: newlyweds, young parents, elderly widows and widowers, fellow singles, middle-aged couples with empty cribs and their own unmet longings. I pray for friends she can laugh with, cry with, pray with, gather with, mourn with, sing with.

I pray that someday, if it be Your will and Your best for her, You would lead her into a friendship that will eventually blossom into something more. I pray that she will one day have the experience of walking down the aisle as an earthly bride.

And I thank You that no matter what, this daughter of Yours will always have the promise of sitting down at a future wedding banquet as Your Son’s beloved, heavenly bride.

In Jesus’s name,

Amen.

Kati Lynn Davis grew up in Chester County. After a brief stay on the other side of Pennsylvania to earn a writing degree from the University of Pittsburgh, she returned to the area and got a job working for a local library. When she isn’t writing, Kati enjoys reading, drawing, watching movies (especially animated ones!), drinking bubble tea, hanging out with her family cat, and going for very slow runs. Kati is pretty sure she’s an Enneagram 4 but is constantly having an identity crisis over it, so thankfully she’s learning to root her sense of self in Jesus.
